Dont be seduced into believing that revision control is only for projects involving large groups. These are situations that I, and probably you, have encountered even when were working on things all by our lonesome. Note that neither of these common scenarios has anything to do with having multiple programmers on a project. And of course, you could be trying to do both at the same time. platform-specific code and in cases where youre using some existing code and making changes to it (possibly at the same time that the original author makes changes to it!). A revision control system becomes indispensable in cases where you have to track common code vs. Second, a lot of what we professional programmers do these days isnt so much original development as synthesis - taking a collection of code, some of which we wrote and some of which we didnt, and gluing it all together, making whatever changes to the pieces prove necessary along the way. First, many of us are doing cross-platform development and struggling to maintain feature-for-feature compatibility between platforms. Nevertheless, two observations about software development today will demonstrate the pertinence of the subject. If I hadnt found a couple of systems worth writing about, this article wouldnt exist. Ive always found RCS, Projector, and previous versions of SourceSafe to be so confusing and unwieldy as to be more trouble than they were worth for groups of anything less than about five users. Dont get the idea that Im a great lover of revision control, either. Of all the companies Ive been with, only three have even attempted to use it - and at two of these, the decision was driven by engineers on particular projects, sometimes with the result that projects couldnt share files because their revision control systems werent compatible. Revisionist History Volume Number: 12 Issue Number: 6 Column Tag: Version Control Educational Institution and Student Discounts. This most recent version adds minor interface enhancements and assorted bug fixes. The only major issue we can fault MacJournal for is the 15-day trial period, which is a little short for this sort of application, especially given its rich and complex feature set. You also get password protection and encryption, integration with Apple's Mail, and a wide variety of export options, such as PDF, HTML, Word, and even iPod Notes. You can include nearly any sort of content, from movies to PDFs to podcasts, and bloggers will like that its formatting translates well to HTML, with support for TypePad, Blogger, LiveJournal, and more. MacJournal gives you a fairly intuitive, feel-good interface (especially its green-text-on-black, full-screen writing mode), and a ton of tools for organizing your thoughts and words, including a built-in calendar, good search function, a system of nested entries and journals, and keyword tags, labels, priorities, and other opportunities for annotation. Aside from the fact that Armstrong would probably still kick butt on a Wal-Mart bike, they've got a point: MacJournal is one of the best journaling programs available for the Mac, with a huge range of features that are useful whether you're keeping a journal for yourself, taking notes for classes or meetings, organizing random snippets of info, or prepping blog posts offline. The developers behind MacJournal admit that you can use a traditional word processor or text editor for journaling-but they say that's like Lance Armstrong using a bike from Wal-Mart to race in the Tour de France.
